What to Consider:

Choosing the Best Women’s Winter Jacket

Best women's winter hiking jacket

DOWN VS. SYNTHETIC

Synthetic insulation and Down insulation, what is the difference?

Well, the Down insulation provide more warmth with the least weight and is very packable, but the pros of down insulation is it does get wet, but however there is water-protection that is made to handle some clamminess.

WATER PROTECTION

Some winter jackets are not completely waterproof, but some can handle moisture better than others. Many winter jackets for women feature an outer layer that is treated with durable water repellent (DWR), so water beads up instead of soaking in.

If you spend a lot of time in rainy or snowy weather, you will benefit from a jacket filled with hydrophobic down, which is designed to continue to provide insulation even if it gets damp.

WEIGHT AND COMPRESSIBILITY

When buying a winter hiking jacket, it is important to consider weight and compressibility.

jacket’s weight and packability often go hand in hand, so looking at the weight spec should give you a fairly accurate idea of how compressible each jacket is, you most likely will not be wearing your jacket on the entire hike as you work up a sweat, so having a jacket that won’t add a lot of weight to your pack and can easily pack down is important.

Down jackets tend to be more lightweight and packable than synthetic jackets, so having packable jacket (like the Ghost Whisperer Down or Rab Neutrino Pro) will be much easier to stuff away daypack or overnight backpacking pack.

Fill

Fill power measures the loft and quality of the down. To calculate fill, a one-ounce sample of down is compressed in a cylinder. The higher the number, the warmer the jacket — though the fill power isn’t the only variable affecting a jacket’s warmth.

But the higher the fill quality, the less down is needed to create the same warmth. This is because it’s able to trap more air and warmth within the jacket. Higher fill power is also more compressible, loftier, more lightweight, and pricier.

Fill power ratings range from 300 to 900 and even greater. Most of the jackets on this list are in the 800-fill range.
